,,The town under Urpín“ as many people call our town (Urpín is a famous hill). The heart of Central Slovakia lies in the Zvolen basin, in the valley of the river Hron between Kremnické, Starohorské hills and Polana.

The first evidence of people in our region dates back to the Stone Age. Some historical sources even confirm that around 2500 BC. Real great development occurs only in the first century AD. The Slavs started settling and the first settlement of Bystrica was established. The history of the city officially began in 1255 by the granting of city privileges by the Hungarian king Bello IV. Thanks to rich mineral wealth, especially copper, in the surrounding mountains, Banská Bystrica has become one of the mining centres of Europe.

The 20th Century in Banská Bystrica is inherently connected with the Second World War and the Slovak National Uprising. Banská Bystrica was the centre of the uprising. After war, Bystrica definitively became one of the three main territorial centres of Slovakia.

Visitors in Banská Bystrica can also enjoy a great cultural and social life. The national opera, theatre ,,Z Pasáže“ (From the Passage),  where actors are mentally disabled, also the Studio of Dance, and the  professional Puppet Theatre all please the young and the old. Traditional are mainly folklore performances, but also choral singing, classical music, permanent exhibitions and exhibitions of several museums and galleries.

The historical centre of the town with the castle area and the SNP square and the adjacent streets behind the City Monument Reserve is considered one of the most beautiful in Slovakia.

Banská Bystrica is also an important Slovak sports centre, and in 2017 it was entitled the European City of Sports.
Numerous monuments and the beauty of the surrounding countryside add to the overall experience of visiting the city, and many visitors also know the slogan ,,Alive in Banská Bystrica, after death in heaven”.
