The history of Yekaterinburg began during the industrial development of the Urals in the early 18th century. At this time in the Middle Urals, rich in natural resources, iron foundries, copper smelting and ironmaking plants were actively built, among which the Ekaterinburg plant, the largest metallurgical enterprise of Russia of that time and the center for the management of the mining industry of the whole Urals and Siberia, became a stand-alone. Already from the first years of its existence, Ekaterinburg occupies an important place in the country - it housed a mint providing the treasury with a copper coin, and a lapidary factory manufacturing decorations and interior items for the imperial court.

In June 1723, at the initiative of de Gennin, it was proposed to give the new fortress factory the name Katerinenburkh - in honor of Catherine I, for which he asked permission from the empress in his letter of June 6, 1723:

"... near these plants, he conceived a fortress and dared to call Katerinenburkh until the decree, and is called Katerinenburkh in memory of Your Majesty"
The answer came in September – de Gennin's proposal was approved, but in the imperial decree the name changed a little – Ekaterinburg. And on copper coins, which began to be produced at the plant as early as the 1720s, there were three different variants of writing – Yekaterinburg, Ekaterinyurbh and Ekaterin Burkh.
In the territory now occupied by Yekaterinburg, since ancient times there have been settlements of people. The earliest of the з settlements belong to the era of the Mesolithic VIII - VII thousand BC. e.
